Ethylene Oxide Adds to Toxic Burden for Memphis Residents

Residents exposed by being close to ethylene oxide plants are filing lawsuits related to exposure to this cancer-causing toxic gas.

Who Can Qualify for a Claim?

If you or a loved one lived, worked, or attended school near an ETO Sterilization Plant and developed Breast Cancer, Leukemia, Lymphoma, Multiple Myeloma, or another type of cancer, had birth defects or a miscarriage you may be entitled to significant compensation.

Holding Corporations Accountable For Exposing the Memphis Community to a Known Carcinogen

Despite being a known human carcinogen, EtO is still widely used and exposes nearby communities to its harmful effects.

The EPA has red-flagged the facility in Memphis due to its unreasonable high risks to the community.

Significant Financial Compensation May Be Available

The cancers and medical conditions identified include:

  • Blood cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Stomach cancer
  • Lymphomas (Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s)
  • Leukemia
  • Birth Defects
  • Miscarriages

Studies of factory workers show that long-term chronic exposure can also cause:

  • Irritation of the skin and eyes
  • Respiratory irritation
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Numbness
  • Memory loss
  • Increased risk of miscarriage in pregnant women
  • Decreased sperm and testicular weight in men

Sterilization Services of Tennessee is a commercial sterilizer that uses a chemical gas called ethylene oxide, referred to as EtO. This chemical is used to sterilize medical equipment and devices. This facility has been in operation since 1976. Shelby County Health Department's Air program has permitted the facility since 1985.

Ethylene oxide emissions in the census tract where Sterilization Services is located in South Memphis are responsible for nearly 82 percent of the estimated cancer risk from toxic air pollutants, according to the lead author of the Union of Concerned Scientists analysis (UCS is also a party, along with several other environmental and grassroots groups, to a lawsuit pressuring the EPA to come up with new, stricter ethylene oxide standards for sterilizers).

The level of emissions from the Memphis plant is such that people who live closest to it face a cancer risk of 2,000 additional cases per one million people. Anything over 100/1 million is considered unreasonably dangerous.

Children are particularly sensitive to ethylene oxide exposure as it can damage their DNA, which divides more rapidly for them than for adults.

What Are the Health Risks With Ethylene Oxide?

In late 2016, the EPA classified ethylene oxide as a human carcinogen. This classification decision was a response to studies showing that inhaling the chemical can, if inhaled for long enough, cause cancer in human beings.
